Spanish false friends: actual and actualmente. Visit #español #learnspanish #language

False friends are an important issue when studying a foreign language. All of us have sometimes mistaken meanings. You have to learn from your mistakes, so as not to make them again.

The Spanish adjective actual does not mean actual in English. Likewise, actualmente is not the equivalent of actually. Their meanings are:

Actual: present, current.

Actualmente (en la actualidad): presently, currently, at present, now, nowadays.

Actual: real / mismo.

Actually: en realidad, la verdad es que / incluso.

Let's see some examples to illustrate these false friends (find audio below):

Polka dot is the hottest trend now.

Actualmente tengo 37 años.

An introduction to “El Quijote” with audio

El Quijote (painting by Damiao Martins) with audio. Visit #español #spanish #learnspanish
By Damiao Martins

El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha (in English, The ingenious gentleman Don Quixote of la Mancha). Painting by Brazilian artist Damiao Martins.

El Quijote is a two-volume novel that narrates the adventures of Alonso Quijano, Don Quijote, a gentleman that lives in a fantasy world of chivalry. Sancho Panza, his squire, is his true companion along 126 chapters. Thought to be a parody of novels of chivalry, El Quijote has become one of the most important works of the Spanish and universal literature. Its author, Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra (1547-1616), is considered the father of the first modern novel.

El Quijote is not suitable for beginners in Spanish language, given the outdated vocabulary and its complexity. Anyway, we provide some links to abridged editions so that you can enjoy this work:

First lines of “El Quijote” (find audio below)

“En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor.”

"Somewhere in la Mancha, in a place which name I do not care to remember, a gentleman lived not long ago, one of those who had a disused lance and an ancient leather shield, a skinny nag and a greyhound for the chase."
